India Meteorological Department/IMD is the National Meteorological Service in India and was established in the year 1875. IMD is the chief government agency in all matters relating to Meteorology, Seismology and allied fields.
There are six Regional Meteorological Centres /RMCs that have with their headquarters at Kolkatta, Guwahati, Chennai, Nagpur, Mumbai and New Delhi. Regional Meteorological Centre at Chennai (IMD Chennai) is responsible for the weather related activities of Southern India that comprises the states of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and the Lakshadweep Islands and Puducherry Union territories.
